This item is not a promotional release.

The squidgypak (or squidgy pack) is a type of PVC gatefold sleeve (folding, like a wallet) in which each side of the sleeve is filled with a bluish liquid.  One side of the sleeve houses the booklet, the other side has the CD -- there is no jewel or slimline case.  A small plastic baby and dollar bills are floating in the liquid in an attempt to recreate the album's cover art.

This sounds like a really cool collectible to search for, right?  Well, they are except for these two reasons:

  • · The liquid tends to dry up over time, leaving powdery residue.  Finding an original with actual liquid instead of dried-up powder may be difficult.

    · I used the word "original" just now because there are counterfeit copies of this!  I'm not sure how widespread these are, but a dealer at a record show was selling them at one time.  (The idiot was making them in his exhibitor's booth, so it was easy to figure out his scam.)  I'm not sure what the plastic baby and dollar bills look like, but I would think it wouldn't be easy to make versions identical to those found in the original sleeves.  Additionally, instead of a gatefold sleeve, look for a plastic sleeve placed over a slimline or jewel case.  The sleeve will have a pouch or some sort of section to hold the blue liquid, but it's not a folding sleeve like the original.  Since the original copies didn't have a case of any kind, this is an obvious giveaway.

Most of the people reporting info about this item are in Europe.  I don't know if that's where all copies were sold, but the CD is definitely an American pressing.  It's also worth noting that at this time we don't know if the squidgypak sleeve is official or if a company added it to CDs and resold them.  The appearance of the plastic baby and dollars does seem to indicate everything is official.

This item can be dated to at least 1993 or or early 1994:

"I don't know if this helps, but I remember seeing this item for sale in record stores in Germany prior to Kurt's death.  I know this because I went desparately looking for it after his suicide, but it was obviously sold out."
