Live At Duffy's

Live Nirvana Bootography Rating: B  82%

Live Nirvana Bootography Review:
Stiff Drinks and Saturday Night Sonic Attack are preferred titles to this CD. It sounds like Live At Duffy's was either sourced from the aforementioned titles, or taken from the same source... except it's quite a few generations down the line (copy of a copy of a copy...). Whatever the source, it's missing the Blew track (all commercial release are missing this) and the sound quality is inferior. It's a real pity considering the terrific artwork and the power of the 5/13/90 show.
There is also a horrible editing error that overlaps "Negative Creep" & "Drain You" , ruining both songs.

When I first got this disc, I liked it pretty much (much caused by the fact that it was the first release I got Here She Comes Now on), but I got tired of it (that happens with everything, I guess). Still, it's a worthy purchase. The sound quality is very good, the tracks are OK, though no outstanding performances.

Live At Duffy's is a recording of two of their shows 1 emanating from Duffy?s bar in Nebraska in 1990, and the other from Del Mar, California in 1991. A spirited playing of 'School' starts the show, and the recording is actually pretty good. Floyd the barber follows, then Spank Thru, and it?s pretty obvious that at this point their set was rather limited. Following Scoff, Krist announces that we've got a new album coming out in September, and this is gonna be on the album, this segues into Dive, which is still embryonic, and features the same verse over and over. About a girl follows, and then we have another embryonic track Breed. It's decent. Big Cheese and Love Buzz get good responses from the crowd as does the velvet underground cover here she comes now. A developing Polly is next, and it's good. The rest of the 90 show is pretty decent, however it is missing Blew, and that's enough to put the rating down. The disc finishes off with some of the stuff from the 12/28/91 show, with most of the Nevermind-era stuff. A good show, with a lot of energy. Recommended.

the del mar filler is taken from the pre-fm westwood one radio disc "superstar concert series" it is identical to what appears on "california uberalles" making it the best souding version of the del mar show available on bootleg i've deducted 4 points for the fact that the 5/13/90 show is missing "blew" and the 12/28/91 show is missing "about a girl" & "breed"
