Live Nirvana Bootography Rating: A
Live Nirvana Bootography Review:
This is a clone of "Suicide Solution", below is the review for that disc:
Extraordinary!!!!! A must have!! This is the last time some of these songs were played live, not to mention its an excellent brilliantly clear audience recording. Too bad "Lounge Act" and "Milk It" were left out of the set... they did play Frances Farmer... and most likely (in my opinion) the best ever live version of Sappy. If you can find this, I highly recommend getting it.
Post Script: In 2006 an 83 minute long DAT(1) of this source surfaced, Kris
Sproul had this to say:
It appears that this DAT(1) is not a perfect clone of the DAT master. The reason I say this is that a spectral analysis shows the frequencies cutting off around 16kHz (indicative of a 32kHz DAT), while this is a 48kHz DAT. That would seem to indicate that the DAT was resampled or possibly even cloned through an analog cable to a 48kHz DAT. I'm still torrenting the 48kHz version though, since it's the still the closest things to the original. And for those wondering if the 16kHz cutoff may be MP3 related, that's not the case. This is a DAT copy straight from the taper.
It's still an upgrade over the bootleg though. MZ and I have discussed this, and we think the bootleg actually has an analog tape gen in it. For one thing, there's a short cut somewhere in the middle of the bootleg, indicative of a tape flip (this cut is not on the DAT). Also, a spectral analysis of the bootleg shows most of the audio cutting off around 16kHz, but some random noise above 16kHz, indicating some analog involvement. Additionally, when the DAT is EQ'd to match the sound of the bootleg (by raising the high end), the bootleg still has more hiss, indicating an analog gen.
So what we have here is a true known gen that's an upgrade over the bootleg, but still not 100% the best copy possible, as far as we can tell. Getting a better clone from the taper is being worked on, but it could be months (if at all), so this is the best we have now, and I figured we might as well distribute it and replace the bootleg.
I should also note, for those who are just interested in how the show sounds, that this one sounds more dull than the bootleg, due to the EQing that was done to the bootleg. This still sounds great, as it is a copy of the master, but when you listen to it side-by-side with the bootleg, you can tell that the bootleg has a lot more high end EQ'd into it. So some may prefer the altered, remastered bootleg sound.
