Live At Hollywood Rock Festival 93

Nirvana Bootography Rating: A-  90%

Nirvana Bootography Review:
"Hollywood Rock Festival 93" has one of the most unique Nirvana shows of all times. There are a couple of other commercially available discs with the 01-23-93 show, but this set is the most complete and has the best sound quality. The recording sounds like it came from a VERY generated professional open mic source and has places throughout the discs where the sound drops out for a split second (all releases of this show have this problem). The band is very animated throughout the show. If not for all the oddities that occur during the performance, this set would receive a much lower rating. Below is an attempt to transcribe most of the crazy things that go on during the show.

1. Disc starts out with Kist singing "lonely lonely lonely night" (Led Zep.), then there's a stupid jam that leads into "Carmen"

2. After "In Bloom" Krist says "So I'm supposed to say witty things to get you people all whipped up... to get you all cooking! What do you think of that, huh? You guys ready for something like that? And that in itself is kind of a witty thing to say... it's kind of like... you know, you know... it is, but it isn't."

3. Before "Love Buzz"
Krist: "See all that smoke coming out of there? That's a giant Hollywood cigarette full of all kinds of nicotine and enough tar to tar a parking lot this size." "And while we're on the issue of astrology, we'll speak about the Zodiac... I wonder if Jesse Helms' sign is Cancer?"
-Crowd starts going nuts. Chanting "OH OH OHHHHHHHH" over and over.
Kurt: "I think 'OH OH OHHHHHHHH' means 'Shut up Krist".

4. Track 8 is "Jealous"... silly song with Krist singing.

5. After "Lithium" -
Kurt: "Smoke Up!!"
Dave: "Kurt Cobain for Hollywood Rock cigarettes.... smooth refreshing flavor. "A taste you can't deny! Hollywood Rock, the cigarette"
Krist: "I don't smoke, but if I smoked I'd smoke Hollywood cigarettes, because they're the best" (in salesman voice)
Kurt: "When I'm in Diarrhea de Janeiro, I like to have the freshly cut dried leaves of a palm tree." "I just can't get enough of that smoke man, I just gotta smoke all the time, I'm a rock 'n roll star." Rock 'n Roll stars need their cigarettes, right?"

6. Polly - inserts comments about Hollywood Cigarettes during the song

7. About a Girl - changes lyrics to "I need a costume change" sooooo I "Would not be so lame"... (other changes too).

8. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" includes Flea on trumpet. You can also hear this track on Outcesticide 2.

9. "On a Plain" starts out with the opening chords for "Been a Son". Couple of blown parts in the song.

10. After " Negative Creep" -
Dave: "HEY!" "There's the guy that gave me the hat... the guy that was jumping up and down."
Krist: "Remember to buy your unauthorized Nirvana headbands at the front gate"
Dave: "Hey guy... remember, this is the hat you gave me right here. That's the hat you gave me... right there... jumping up and down." What'll we trade him because he didn't really give it to me. we traded.... SALUDE!!!"
Dave: (says it so fast you can barely understand him) "This song's called BEENASON!" "BEENASON!!"

11. After "Blew"-
Dave: "I have a hole in my shorts, look." "HEY!!!!! Look at my butt!!!!" "Everybody's getting naked" ]

12. Scentless Apprentice - Extended 10 minute guitar solo

13. Before Dive - "Sweet Emotion jam" (Dave and Krist messing around, Kurt is wearing a dress.).
Krist: "Kurt looks like the little old lady in playboy magazine."
Kurt: "What magazine?"
Krist: "Playboy."
Kurt: "Little old lady from Pasadena"
Krist: "I have pubic hair like a brillo pad"
Kurt: "My water's breaking."
Krist: "Congratulations."

14. - Before "Aneurysm"
Kurt: "Toby toby toby...." (stupid song Kurt sings)

15. Before "Territorial Pissings" -
Krist: (over and over) :GO AHEAD MOTHER F***ER" "I'M GONNA KILL YOU!!!!"

The performance is edited after "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but otherwise seems complete and unedited. The band is as animated at this show as any other, especially when compared to other "In Utero" shows. "Heart Shaped Box" is debuted here also.
The demos on the second disc can be found in better quality elsewhere. The only "nice" thing about the demo filler is the "Cracker, Seed, Sad" that includes the intro to Misery Loves Company.... this intro can only be found on this disc as well as "In the Raw" .
Overall, this is a once in a lifetime type of performance that is marred by a below average recording. This is recommended for veteran collectors who might not mind the sub par recording and can appreciate the wild show. Beginners might like something a little more friendly to the ear.
