(Richie Valens did not write the song, but his adaption is perhaps the best known version from the 20th century. DN member Elwha explains, "It's a traditional Mexican folk song about Mexico's defeat of an invading French force, I believe in the Yucatan Peninsula area, back like in the early 1800s post Mexico's independence from Spain."
