Having spent countless hours tracking down the origin of this video compilation, I feel that I am as qualified as any to compose this short document on it's history.

The video in circulation now is a tape packed with footage of NIRVANA and of the Melvins (this part is currently unsurfaced). None of the generations of any of the individual sections of this tape are known...but the generation of the entire compilation itself has been well tracked. The first version of the Horror Movies Package to surface to the NIRVANA community in early 2000 is plagued with tracking problems. Several months after this version became available a newer upgrade of the video popped up. The new upgrade is the same generation as the older version, and is free of the aforementioned tracking problems (the old version had tracking problems because of poor recording).

The copy currently in circulation originates from a fellow who goes by the name MC Satanic Scotty Hile (who supposedly obtained this recording from Krist Novoselic). Having grown up with Kurt and The Melvins, he has no problem obtaining a copy of this tape. The actual date of him acquiring this tape is unknown. In 1995, A man named Brian McConnell meets MC Satanic Scotty Hile's roomate. Eventually he hangs out with MC Satanic Scotty Hile and attains a copy of this video tape (recorded poorly, so this version has tracking errors).

In the summer of 1999 Brian McConnell sells a copy of an unsurfaced NIRVANA recording that took place on January 23, 1988 (for a ridiculous amount of money) to John Etter, Mike Ziegler, and myself. Tacked on the end of this tape was the "Horror Movies Package" as we know it today. Sadly, the version that we recieved was the one plagued with tracking errors.

In February of 2000, Brian McConnell went back to MC Satanic Scotty Hile's roomate and asked him if he could have his copy of the tape (A first generation, straight from Novoselic's master). His new version was now free of tracking errors.

I suppose a good way to end would be with this brief interview about the Horror Movies between Mike Ziegler (current owner and maintainer of The Happening NIRVANA Archive) and Dale Crover (ex-NIRVANA and current Melvins drummer):

MZ - Do you happen to remember what the title of the movie was called? I've heard rumors from people that Kurt said the movie was titled "Kurt's Bloody Suicide."

DC - I'm sure that there was no title. We were just fucking around with a camera.

MZ - So... what the hell is up with the Mr. T scene in the beginning. Who's crazy mind thought that one up ;-) ?

DC - The Mr. T Idea just developed as we shot it. Krist filmed while I held the lights. Kurt made the satanic altar and played Mr. T. I think I manned the vacuum cleaner for the coke snorting scene. We were going to do more but never finished.

MZ - What did you use to record it?

DC - Novoselic's super 8.
