Notes

NIRVANA publicist, Jim Merlis, recalled a few tense moments backstage, prior to the Saturday Night Live taping. Everyone was incredibly high strung, because it's live and 10 minutes before the performance no one knew where Kurt was. It turned out that he and Courtney were in Ru Paul's dressing room. It was just very nerve-wracking - everyone was there, the head of Geffen, everyone's wives, journalists. During rehearsals, Adam Sandler did his Eddie Vedder impersonation, but it didn't end up on the show. Courtney was really offended by it because she didn't want [Pearl Jam] to think they were responsible for it. It didn't air on the show because of time, but everyone thought NIRVANA had it killed, but they didn't. (1)

Following this performance, the band dispense with long-time soundman, Craig Montgomery. I mean on SNL, I don't really do the sound, I just go there and I help the show's mixer do the sound, but I didn't think there was anything wrong with it, Montgomery protested. I went down to the rehearsal space in Seattle after that and I could tell there was something negative about the vibe, and people were angry with me. And Kurt, this is totally not like him at all to care about the sound, he said, What happened at Saturday Night Live? I'm not saying that you did bad sound, but people are telling me that it didn't sound good on TV. (1)
