LiveNIRVANA.com 2002 Annual Report
Introduction:
LiveNIRVANA.com [LN] was founded by Frank Morris, Matt Reeder and Katey Corrigan in March 2000. Frank Morris decided to cede control of the site in March 2001 to Adam Andrews and Charles Furth, by which point LN had just under 80,000 hits. At the end of 2001, LN had doubled the number of sections it hosted and had received more than 236,000 hits.

Staff Announcements:
LN continues to be owned by Adam Andrews and Charles Furth, who administrate the site.
Chris Lomas retired from the LN Editorial Team in April 2002. Chris Hickman retired as UBB Administrator in February 2002, and also retired from the site in April 2002.
Matt Empson is LN's Technical Director and was also made VBB Administrator in August 2002. Matt Seward rejoined LN's Editorial Team in early 2002. Alex Roberts joined LN's Editorial Team in December 2002.
Chris Lomas retired from LN in April 2002. Chris had a large behind the scenes impact on many LN documents, and was a useful source of ideas, many of which have been implemented on the site. He also spent many hours reading and re-reading drafts of future LN documents, and made many useful suggestions. Chris was also a moderator of the NIRVANA Discussion forum. His input will be sorely missed.
Chris Hickman retired as UBB Administrator when it was disbanded in February 2002, after over a year of service to the community. He continued as a moderator of the Collectible Recordings forum until April 2002, after which he resigned from all duties.
Elections:
In March 2002, elections were held for two new posts: President of LNCU and President of LNDU. The results were announced on April 3rd 2002 as follows:
LNCU President:
Benoit Martigny - 27 votes
Return of Nomination - 2 votes
LNDU President:
Barry Lajnwand - 28 votes
Return of Nomination - 2 votes
Benoit and Barry were thereby elected Presidents of LNCU and LNDU respectively.
LiveNIRVANA Conference:
The inaugural Live NIRVANA Conference, indeed the first ever reported NIRVANA conference, was held in Oxford, UK on March 9th 2002. Attendees came from six countries for a day of NIRVANA-related events and socialising.
We thank Louisa Verykios and Aaron Resch for helping organise the Oxford venues; Adam Andrews, Benoit Martigny and Joris Baas for organising their respective events; and all attendees for making the day such fun for everyone.
Please see later in this annual report for a contemporary report. Another Conference is planned for the future.
Website Sections News:
In February 2002, the Owners purchased a license for a VBulletin Board.
In October 2002, the splash page was revamped, and now includes links to translations of the index page in French (by David Lajeunesse), German (Bastian Stein), Spanish (Carlos Paramio), Portuguese (Felipe Souza), Italian (Paolo Varesi), Dutch (Mathijs Breugem), Danish (Ronnie Sørensen), Swedish (Mattias Andreasson), Finnish (Henri Immonen), Norwegian (Roar Aasheim), Japanese (Sue Chou) and Russian (Anatoliy Akhunov). We are extremely grateful to all those who did the translations, and hope to add more languages in the future.
A) LiveNIRVANA Resources: Section Annual Reports.
The LN Resources category currently comprises of six sections, one of which is completely new this year, and the others have all either had major new additions or updates.
- The Ultimate Bulletin Board [UBB] was abandoned in February 2002 when the owners purchased a license for the VBulletin Board [VBB], and the boards remain the focal point of the site. We would like to thank Matt Empson for researching and installing the new board. There are currently 1245 members, almost triple the number of members from this time last year (445). Following Chris Hickman's resignation in February, Adam and Charles acted as VBB Administrators until August, at which point Matt Empson was made chief of the board.
The structure of the VBB was amended slightly. When moving over to the new board, the two technical forums from the UBB [Questions, Comments and Report Technical Problems] were combined into a single forum called 'Feedback Forum'. The Tea Room, the old refuge for moderators and administrators, was abolished. In April 2002 a new forum called LNDU was added to complement the LNCU in the site-specific resources section.
The NIRVANA Discussion forum is moderated by Erik Bianchi**, Cale Wedell* and Bastian Stein. Bastian joined the LN VBB as a moderator in April 2002, replacing Chris Lomas. NIRVANA Discussion has hosted some lively and fascinating discussions on all aspects of NIRVANA, from photos to news reports to the new releases.
The Collectible Recordings forum is moderated by John Etter**, Adam DeLoach* and Jim Hirte. Jim joined the LN VBB as a moderator in February 2002, replacing Brian McConnell. Chris Hickman also moderated the forum from February to April. Collectible Recordings has seen discussions of live recordings by a variety of bands, and also views on various recording equipments.
The Free Discussion forum is moderated by Marcus Bremer**, Cale Wedell and Matt Seward. Cale replaced John Riedell in April. Matt was added to the forum in May. Joseph Vilane resigned in September, after 18 months of moderation. The forum has hosted controversial debates on a wide variety of topics, from the serious to the trivial.
The Live NIRVANA Collectors' Union forum is moderated by Benoit Martigny and Roar Aasheim. When Benoit Martigny was elected LNCU President in April 2002, he replaced Adam Andrews, Matt Seward and Charles Furth as moderator of the forum. Roar joined him as moderator in October 2002. Please see separate LNCU report below.
The Live NIRVANA Distribution Union forum was set up in April to divorce surfacing material from its distribution, and is currently moderated by Bill Schofield. Barry Lajnwand was elected LNDU President in April 2002 and but resigned from moderating duties in August, was reinstated, and resigned again in September, at which point Bill took over.
The Feedback Forum is moderated by Adam Andrews, and Matt Empson, and has been used to correct errors in LN documents, suggest new sections and much more. Charles Furth moderated this forum as well until September.
Each asterisk denotes a full year of service to LN. We are particularly grateful to these moderators for their long service and ensuring the continuity on LN which enables the site to thrive.
- The Live NIRVANA Collectors' Union [LNCU] has continued its extraordinary progress in 2002, thanks in great part to Benoit Martigny, who following his election as LNCU President in April, completely reinvigorated the section with unprecedented dynamism. By inspiring many others that they had the ability to surface upgrades with a little dedication, LNCU has become a hotbed of activity.
The LNCU consists of an LN website section and a forum on the LN VBB. The website section has had two major additions in 2002: a list of unsurfaced recordings in April, and a list of the lowest known generations of all known sources for concerts in May (integrated with the LN Tour History).
LNCU has surfaced (or been the first known mention of) many of the new recordings which surfaced in 2002, including 10/03/92 Bellingham, WA, US; 11/13/89 Hamburg, Germany; 10/30/92 (complete) Buenos Aires, Argentina; 01/22/93 Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; 10/11/90 Olympia, WA, US; 01/30/94 Seattle, WA, US; 11/25/91 (complete PRO video) Amsterdam, Netherlands; 11/25/91 (more complete radio session) Amsterdam, Netherlands; 02/11/90 San Jose, CA, US; and 06/14/91 Hollywood, CA, US. [LNCU had little or no direct involvement with some of the above.]
In total, this added no fewer than six previously unknown songs to NIRVANA's documented oeuvre, including three from the Rio Session (Seasons In The Sun, an unknown Cobain composition, and an unknown Grohl song), two from the Amsterdam 1991 radio session (one being a short Grohl jam, another being a full song), and one from the 10/30/92 Argentina concert, possibly called 'Nobody Knows I'm New Wave'. However, the biggest sensation was caused by the discovery of the studio version of 'You Know You're Right', much anticipated by everyone with an interest in the band. Indeed, the leaking of this song forced Universal to release NIRVANA (Greatest Hits) much earlier than planned.
A huge number of shows were upgraded, some spectacularly so, and many master tapes were also uncovered, notably 10/19/91 Dallas, TX, US VID(M) in higher quality than the official video Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!, and ANA(M) of 11/30/91 Glasgow, UK.
Masters: 11/08/89, 02/15/90, 04/10/90, 05/29/91, 09/01/91, 10/19/91, 10/25/91, 10/27/91, 11/23/91, 11/30/91, 06/24/92, 11/02/93, 12/14/93
Upgrades: 12/28/88, 10/30/89, 11/01/89, 11/11/89, 11/27/89, 12/03/89, 02/19/90, 03/12/90, 04/17/90, 04/18/90, 04/29/90, 10/25/90, 11/25/90, 05/29/91, 09/21/91, 11/19/91, 11/27/91, 12/04/91, 12/07/91 (x2), 01/24/92, 06/24/92, 08/30/92 (x2), 10/22/93, 11/08/93, 12/05/93, 02/16/94, 02/27/94
At the end of 2002, some clips were posted in the forum which caused great excitement among collectors. The clips of 'Radio Friendly Unit Shifter', 'Endless, Nameless' and 'Seasons In The Sun', believed to be from 11/25/90, 01/18/91 and 08/06/93 respectively, prove that recordings of those three concerts (all of which are highly desired by live aficionados) do exist, and also confirm the early origins of "Radio Friendly...", that "Endless..." was not a spontaneous jam from the Nevermind Sessions, and that 'Seasons...' was not sung in a low drone, contrary to earlier reports. LNCU, as ever, is actively hunting for any sign of these recordings, and we sincerely hope to be able to hear them in their entirety soon.
Other clips, including an early mix of 'In Utero', and an alternate mix of 'You Know You're Right' with more vocals, were posted, but they have yet to be confirmed as real.
We would like to extend our thanks to those who have worked so tirelessly to track down new sources, shows and upgrades over the past 12 months. Since so many people have worked so hard, it is a little unfair on some to specify individuals, but Mike Ziegler, Cale Wedell, Barry Lajnwand, Jim Hirte, Rob Landis, Bill Mayer, Sebastian Jarpa, Ron Harris, John Bacus, Matt Seward, Tamo Luken, David Lajeunesse, Kris Sproul and Benoit himself have all made major contributions. Many others continue to help out behind the scenes, and we thank all of you as well.
Full details of all shows mentioned in this section can be found in LN's Tour History.
In 2001, 5 new concerts and 3 major new sources surfaced. In 2002, 8 new concerts / sessions surfaced, along with dozens of new sources. This increase, which translates directly into more new shows for LN's readers, can be partially attributed to LNCU's work.
We look forward to more successes in 2003, but urge all of you to be vigialant and help out wherever you can, but scouring old tradelists, talking to scenesters, recording shows, or whatever you can. It is only with the help of LNCU's members that it can continue to find new recordings.
- The LiveNIRVANA Chatroom was launched in June 2002, and is a popular forum for those wishing to chat in real time. We especially thank Scott Byczek (PinkFloyd) for setting up the channel #LiveNirvana for us. Credit is also due to Matt Empson for setting it up on LN, and Adam Andrews for writing the rules, and Rasmus Holmen who was instrumental in getting the channel set up.
- The Live NIRVANA Traders' Database was re-written by Rasmus Holmen in 2002. Rolf Fassbind continues to do an excellent job maintaining the Blank Traders list, and the list has been updated three times this year. We would like to thank all members of the Blank Traders List for their services to the community.
- The NIRVANA Bad Traders List has maintained by Roar Aasheim since March, and has been updated 5 times this year. Roar has shown great temperament and dedication with this difficult task.
- The Live NIRVANA News page has been updated 20 times in 2002, and continues to be a useful source of live recordings news for those who lack the time to read the boards frequently.
B) LiveNIRVANA Histories: Section Annual Reports
This category comprises of sixteen sections, four of which are completely new this year, and a further six have had major additions.
- The Live NIRVANA Sessions History [LNSH] has been updated 7 times in 2002, mostly by Charles Furth. The section has had a lot of new information added, especially concerning the Rio session tape which surfaced in August 2002 and 'You Know You're Right' from January 1994 which surfaced in September 2002. A chronological listing was added alongside the various other categories. This section is barely a year old, but is already arguably the definitive sessions guide, and has been cited by sources such as the BBC. In December 2002 Alex Roberts became the maintainer of the section, and she has already updated some of the entries. We wish her well with it, and look forward to reading her contributions.
- The Live NIRVANA Tour History [LNTH] has been updated 19 times in 2002, mostly by Adam Andrews. Three new pages were added, including an 'At A Glance' single page listing of all surfaced recordings, and a links page to analogous documents dealing with other bands. We also thank Roar Aasheim, Mike Ziegler, Kris Sproul and Benoit Martigny for their help with this document.
- The Live NIRVANA Tour Retrospective [LNTR] was launched in October 2002 to house Matt Seward's excellent reviews of the European In Utero tour. The section is integrated with LNTH, but has its own front end as well. Matt has since written reviews of the 1992 Pacific Rim tour. Matt wrote his first batch of reviews in early 2002, and revised and rewrote them several times before they were revealed. We hope Matt will review more tours in 2003.
This section also will gladly accept reviews from other readers, whether already reviewed or not, and Felipe Souza and Michael Shaw have already submitted their verdicts on various concerts already.
C) LiveNIRVANA Guides: Section Annual Reports.
This category comprises of sixteen sections, four of which are completely new this year, and a further six have had major additions.
- The LiveNIRVANA TV Guide remains one of LN's most original documents, and will be integrated with LN's PRO tapers Guide in 2003..
- The LiveNIRVANA DVD Guide has been updated 11 times in 2002, and has matured into a useful resource. Jim Hirte and Barry Lajnwand have both spent many hundreds of hours converting low-generation videos to the DVD format, and have also been kind enough to supply video captures for this guide. A grand total of 35 videos have thusfar been transferred to DVD-R.
- The First and Last Performance Guide has been updated 5 times in 2002, and now reflects the latest known information.
- The LiveNIRVANA Guide to Mislabels has also been updated 5 times in 2002. Recordings which 'moved' dates in 2002 include: 07/07/89 changed to 07/08/89; 09/09/89 changed to 09/30/89; 11/13/89 from Love Box is now believed to be 11/09/89 (or maybe 11/12/89); and 11/17/89 changed venue and location.
- The Audiophile Completists' Guide to NIRVANA Bootleg CDs has not been updated in 2002, but has had some minor cosmetic changes.
- The LiveNIRVANA Companion to Official Releases has been updated twice, and now includes an in-depth review of NIRVANA (the 2002 greatest hits album) and a frame-by-frame guide to the 'You Know You're Right' promotional video. We would like to thank Andy Pfeiffer, Mike Ziegler and in particular Ron Harris for their help with this page.
- The Pro-Tapers List has not been updated in 2002, but a second edition of this document, fully updated, will be released in 2003.
- NIRVANA Concert Statistics is now integrated with the Live NIRVANA Tour History, but has not been updated this year.
- The NIRVANA Fakes Guide has been completely reorganised and re-written. The second edition was written by Adam Andrews, and he also added a Frequently Asked Questions page. The section is now maintained by Alan Lonsdale, who vastly expanded its scope, and helpfully split the entries into four categories. He is now working on another update. We thank Alan for joining the LN Team to work on this section.
- The Live NIRVANA Guide to Tributes and Cover Versions is a new section, written by Brett Robinson for LN, and was luanched in May 2002. It gives details of all known cover versions of NIRVANA songs, and also of songs covered by NIRVANA. We thank Brett for writing this interesting document.
- Inside The Horror Movies has not required updating in 2002.
- Bootlegs For Beginners was updated once in 2002, to add a new document called 'Notation of Recording Generations', written by Roar Aasheim.
- The Live NIRVANA World Postal Guide is a new section, and was launched in May 2002. The World Postal Guide was written to guide traders who may be unfamiliar with sending packages overseas, and to advise on the different rates available. Currently seven countries are covered in detail.
- The Top 10 NIRVANA Concerts is another new section, and was launched in May 2002. It lists what LN readers consider to be the best concerts, according to five criteria: best sound quality, best setlist, most enthusiasm, best concert banter, most interesting, and overall top 10 best shows. It has since been updated once.
- The Top 10 NIRVANA Live Songs is yet another new section, and was launched in October 2002. This is intended as a sister document to the Top 10 Concerts. Another document in the series, the Top 10 Studio Songs, will be forthcoming in 2003.
- The NIRVANA Live Guide is not hosted at LN, but has been updated six times in 2002. We thank Kris Sproul for his efforts.
D) LiveNIRVANA Documents: Section Annual Reports
This category contains five sections.
- Rare Concert Photos has been updated six times in 2002 and has had many new additions over the past year. We thank all those who have submitted them.
- NIRVANA: A Day-by-Day History has been updated 4 times in 2002.
- The Live NIRVANA Lifetime Achievement Award section has just been refurbished to keep all the entries up to date.
- The Important Documents section has been updated 7 times, including the addition of 6 editorials to The Pencil Pages. Joseph Vilane has worked prodigiously on his corner of LN and has now written 24 editorials in total. A major addition is a transcript of Benoit Martigny's excellent speech to the March 2002 NIRVANA Conference, which outlines how the live trading scene really works and suggests strategies for surfacing more material. The other documents in the section have not required updating.
- Live NIRVANA Links has had some minor modifications in 2002.
LiveNIRVANA Events:
A) Live NIRVANA Conference Report
This report was written on March 10th 2002, the day after the conference.
The attendees were:
England: Adam Andrews, Charles Furth, Jim Felton, Ben Marsh
Wales: Matt Seward
France: Benoit Martigny, Ouragan Jacquier, Nicolas Ferry, Youri Lacan-Bartley
Netherlands: Joris Baas
Greece: Louisa Verykios
USA: Bill W, Andrew K, Albert
The attendees assembled in St Peter's College, Oxford for the reception, with wine, beer and lots of snacks. Everyone was introduced, and samples of Cobain's artwork were passed around.
Benoit Martigny then improvised an eloquent and learned speech on the NIRVANA Trading scene and future strategies for finding new material, which was exceptionally incisive and a transcript of it (with photo of the event) now features in LN's Important Documents section. He spoke for 45 minutes, barely pausing for breath. Charles rounded off the discusion and fielded questions from the floor. Benoit was then presented with the 'LN award for longest speech at the conference', which was a Korean statue. Benoit celebrated his success by demolishing an entire bottle of red wine.
Adam Andrews prepared a Conference Quiz, with 20 taxing questions (which will also eventually appear on LN). Scores varied from 3 to 15, with Joris racking up an exceptional 5/20, but it was agreed that Benoit M and Matt Seward were joint winners with a score of 13/20. The first tie-breaker was also a tie, so a second one was hurriedly improvised. Matt S demonstrated a vast amount of useless knowledge and Benoit conceded the contest, and was presented with the grand prize.
The conference reassembled in Exeter College to watch a video of one of NIRVANA's finest performances, 11/25/91 Amsterdam, just when the band was reaching the height of its popularity, courtesy of the generosity of Joris. The big screen and decent sound system really enhanced our viewing enjoyment. Benoit, for reasons unknown to the rest of us, felt the need to demonstrate his enthusiasm by stripping off, dancing down the aisles, and diving into the screen.
A pub crawl, which consisted of just one pub, was then initiated. The Turf Tavern was selected for its proximity, and many half-pints were drunk by the French contingent. We sat around a fire and toasted marshmallows in the flames. Benoit gave a staggering exposition of how to chat up English girls by using a broad French accent and talking about 'gay Paris' a lot.
We reconvened in The Mongolian Wok, which features DIY Mongolian food. The restaurant boasts karaoke in the late evening, and Benoit's duet of 'Pretty Fly for a White Guy' with an adoring girl was extremely well received for its lasciviousness, if nothing else!
Some of the party went on to the legendary music venue The Zodiac (part-owned by Radiohead) for indie-night, while the rest of us chilled out in Louisa's room.
The conference attendees retired for the night to St Edmund Hall and Brasenose College.
B) Live NIRVANA On Tour 2002
Adam and Charles took the opportunity to travel around the USA in June 2002, and were very generously received by many LN members.
Very many thanks to John and Sara Riedell; Cory and Michelle Brookshire; Frank Morris and band; Kris Sproul and Jamie; Mitch and Nora Vassar; Barry Lajnwand and Evie; and Rob Landis and friends; who were all exceptionally generous in offering floor space, couches, inflatable beds and whatever else was available to us.
Marcus Bremer; Damien Rockwell; Brett Robinson, Katey Corrigan and Bill Schofield also kindly took the time to intercept Charles and Adam on their trip.
Thanks to everyone who met us for so many special memories and for entertaining us so well.

In October 2002, Charles returned to USA, and teamed up with Digital NIRVANA's Mitch Vassar for a visit to the North West. Jim Hirte and John Terhes (the latter of DN) both provided execptional hospitality, and all convened at an Eyes Adrift concert in Portland, OR. Mitch, Jim and Charles also travelled up to Olympia and met Mike Ziegler and Brian McConnell. Thanks to all of the above for another fun-filled adventure.
Predictions for 2003:
Record Company profits will continue to dwindle as CD copying and on-line file sharing continue to grow exponentially. Expect the record companies to hit out at soft targets, including live collectors, in a series of high-profile busts, seizures and court cases, despite the fact that live collectors are not the ones in any way responsible for their declining fortunes.
Video cassettes will become redundant as DVD-Rs predominate as the video format of choice.
All new NIRVANA release dates will be postponed yet again.
LiveNIRVANA.com's index page will pass 1,000,000 hits.
The status of LiveNIRVANA.com
LiveNIRVANA.com costs several hundred dollars a year in hosting fees. This considerable expense
is paid entirely by the current owners of LiveNIRVANA.com as a gift and a contribution to the
NIRVANA community.
In accordance with the express wishes of the band, LiveNIRVANA.com does not have any advertising
