Lounge Act

Status
Nirvana Song

Song Author
Kurt Cobain

Writing Period

Recording Session(s)
May to June 1991 - Sound City, Van Nuys CA {prod by Butch Vig}

Notes
This song got its title because the band thought the guitar riffs sounded like something a lounge band would play. The lyrics is about having a certain vision and being smothered by a relationship.

Apparently Kurt wrote this song about his old girlfriend Tobi Vail (Bikini Kill and Go Team). In an unsent letter addressed to Tobi he wrote:

"Every song on this record [In Utero] is not about you. No, I am not your boyfriend. No, I don't write songs about you, except for 'Lounge Act,' which I do not play, except when my wife is not around."

Tell Me

Lyrics
"Nevermind" version

Truth, covered in security
I can't let you smother me
I'd like to but it wouldn't work
Trading off and taking turns
I don't regret a thing

And I've got this friend, you see
Who makes me feel and I
Wanted more than I could steal
I'll arrest myself, I'll wear a shield
I'll go out of my way to prove I still
Smell her on you

Don't tell me what I wanna hear
Afraid of never knowing fear
Experience anything you need
I'll keep fighting jealousy
Until it's fucking gone

And I've got this friend, you see
Who makes me feel and I
Wanted more than I could steal
I'll arrest myself, I'll wear a shield
I'll go out of my way to prove I still
Smell her on you

Truth, covered in security
I can't let you smother me
I'd like to but it couldn't work
Trading off and taking turns
I don't regret a thing

And I've got this friend, you see
Who makes me feel and I
Wanted more than I could steal
I'll arrest myself, I'll wear a shield
I'll go out of my way to make you a deal
We've make a pact to learn from who
Ever we want without new rules
And we'll share what's lost and what we grew
They'll go out of their way
To prove they still
Smell her on you
They still
Smell her on you
Smell her on you

you. – keeping everything in line
mastering the art to remind begging me to lighten up never seems to be enough lounging in the sea and Ive got this
I burnt my hands so I can’t feel Ill wet my bed to make you a deal Ill gouge my eyes Ill wear high heels Ill wrack my brain to prove I can still Smell Him On You
You – wishing everything away bring it back another day
Safety is a special suit cover up a home
